The Power List 2016

Lara Pijuan

Lara, a cytopathologist and pulmonary pathologist at Barcelona’s Hospital del Mar, was nominated for her application of digital pathology in clinical practice. Her interests lie in digital pathology and immunotherapy, which has led to an unexpected aspect of her work: helping companies improve their digital pathology and immunohistochemistry products so that pathologists can work more efficiently and patients can benefit from new treatments. But Lara says her true motivation is to do her best for lung cancer patients. “I felt very proud when my pulmonary oncologist said to me that I was the best pathologist taking care of his biopsies.” She adds modestly, “Maybe it’s true. I have the control of all the steps of the pulmonary biopsy workflow from registration to counting the percentage of malignant cells. I love taking care of it.”
