The Power List 2016

Anne Barasa

Anne is a lecturer in immunology at the University of Nairobi’s Department of Human pathology and a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. She has been praised for her work on the pathology of HHV 8 infection and for her leadership and training of residents and scientists. She says the most important lesson she has learned so far is the need for a conscious effort to stay up-to-date. “There are new discoveries every day. It can get overwhelming, but it is fascinating.” She also relates a story to highlight that pathologists, like everyone else, are only human. “I was examining a peripheral blood film under the microscope and struggling to focus. I wear prescription eyeglasses and thought the problem was with my eyes, so I asked a colleague to take a look – only for him to tell me that the slide was upside down!”
