ESCMID Global

Welcome to ESCMID Global 2024!

The largest European congress for clinical microbiology and infectious disease has arrived in Barcelona, Spain! Since its creation in 1991, ESCMID Global had grown in size and stature, attracting around 10,000 participants each year. Get ready to engage in keynote lectures, exercise the brain in interactive workshops, sit in on symposia, or meet the experts in the special sessions. The agenda is brimming with opportunity!

Here at The Pathologist, we’ve got plenty of events filling up our diaries – but what are you most excited about? Are you looking to broaden your network, peruse new products, or build on your educational knowledge? Let us know your plans!

Must Sees

Day 1

8:30am - 10:30am (Hall G) – Climate change and the spectrum of infectious consequences

This symposium aims to provide an overview of the impact of the eco-climatic crisis on infectious disease care and epidemiology. Organized by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Infektiologie, ESCMID Professional Affairs Subcommittee, ESCMID Study Group for Infections in Travellers and Migrants (ESGITM), Trainee Association of ESCMID (TAE) Steering C.

4:15pm - 6:15pm (Hall H) – Global perspectives on infection control and prevention: strategies and outcomes

In this oral session, hear from a line-up of speakers sharing strategies and outcomes for healthcare associated infections – from Metagenome and resistome characterisation of FERARO, to regional prospective whole genome sequencing of multidrug-resistant Enterobacterales.

Day 2

8:30am - 10:30am (Hall H) – Treatment strategies for transplant-associated infections

A symposium focused on immunology, immunocompromize and vaccinology. Hear from a line-up of speakers working in treatment strategies in transplant recipients as they share current research progress and future perspectives for the field.

4:15pm - 5:15pm (Hall I) – Machine learning and generative AI in CM/ID practice

This symposium, organized by Trainee Association of ESCMID (TAE) Steering Committee, ESCMID Study Group for Genomic and Molecular Diagnostics (ESGMD), aims to critically evaluate the potential benefits and drawbacks of machine learning and generative AI in CM/ID practice. Join experts in the field to discuss the role of generative AI in shaping the future of medicine and other areas of research.

Day 3

8:30am - 10:30am (Hall J) – Emerging vector-borne and zoonotic viruses diseases

Viral infections and diseases continue to plague the globe, but where do we currently stand in this battle? Attend this oral session to hear from a panel of professionals working closely with emerging vector-borne and zoonotic viruses.

2:45pm - 3:45pm (Hall K) – NTDs with skin manifestations: diagnostic and treatment challenges

Interested in expanding your knowledge of parasitic diseases and global health? Make sure you attend this symposium organized by ESCMID Study Group for Clinical Parasitology (ESGCP), ESCMID Study Group for Infections in Travellers and Migrants (ESGITM). Hear from professionals in cutaneous leishmaniasis and Hansen’s disease to learn how they manage diagnostic and treatment challenges.

Day 4

11am - 12pm (Hall A) – Viral infections in stem cell transplantation: a lifetime journey

In this keynote lecture, Per Ljungman outlines his journey in immunology and vaccinology. This unmissable session will showcase the impact of viral infections, the evolution of treatment and diagnostic innovation, and how to address present and future challenges.

1:30pm - 3:30pm (Hall E) – Elimination of viral hepatitis: a puzzle still to be solved

Have we moved forward in the elimination of viral hepatitis? This symposium showcases what we’ve learned about viral infection and disease, and what we’ve yet to discover. Organized by Croatian Society for Infectious Diseases of the Croatian Medical Association, ESCMID Study Group for Viral Hepatitis (ESGVH), Società Italiana di Malattie Infettive e Tropicali (SIMIT), Slovenian Soci.
