About Ahmed Kalebi

Quotes from Ahmed Kalebi

On choosing pathology:

“I had my epiphany moment when I was told to look at a Merkel cell tumor. I literally saw the proverbial light down the microscope and realized that pathology provides the diagnosis and enables appropriate patient management. I immediately decided that I wanted to become a pathologist rather than a surgeon.”

On priorities for the profession:

“Powered by advancing technology, including miniaturization and information technology, the emerging trend in POCT is a game changer in pathology, regardless of the socioeconomic context of the patients and healthcare systems. We witnessed the impact of COVID-19 rapid tests and self-testing during the pandemic. More needs to be done to invest and improve POCT which will enhance accessibility, availability, acceptability and quality of testing to billions of people across the world.”

On addressing challenges in pathology:

“Resource constraints should not set the limit of technological ambition. Laboratories in our setting should not be expected to wait at the end of the technology adoption curve. My aim has never been to recreate yesterday’s laboratory at lower cost in Africa. It has been to show that we can build tomorrow’s laboratory here, now.”
