One of the biggest challenges in pathology today is keeping pace with rapid technological and informational advances, particularly in the era of precision medicine and digital health. There remains a significant educational gap in biomarker testing, digital pathology, and augmented intelligence – especially for practicing pathologists who cannot always attend in-person society meetings. To address this need, it is essential to provide free, virtual, CME-accredited, high-quality education and professional development opportunities. In collaboration with pathology associations, I have led several innovative initiatives, including:
1. Digital Anatomic Pathology Academy (DAPA), Digital Pathology Association (DPA), since 2020
DAPA is a virtual whole-slide imaging platform powered by PathPresenter, freely accessible to more than 4,000 DPA members and pathology trainees worldwide, who can join at no cost. More than just an archive, it offers live programs such as fellowships, travel awards, case-of-the-month, grand rounds, weekly virtual lectures, and interactive case reviews, including programs co-hosted with the Chinese American Pathologists Association. DAPA enables pathologists – regardless of their practice setting or stage of digital adoption – to gain proficiency and confidence in digital pathology. At USCAP 2025, many members expressed appreciation for this unique, globally accessible educational resource.
2. Precision Medicine Academy (PMA), Florida Society of Pathologists (FSP), since 2025
The PMA focuses on integrating biomarker testing, molecular pathology, digital pathology, and AI into pathology practice. With an outcome-driven curriculum, the Academy elevates biomarker testing and molecular pathology standards through accessible, CME-accredited content. Activities include virtual lectures, webinars, multidisciplinary tumor boards, and both virtual and in-person rotations. Supported by educational grants from AstraZeneca and Daiichi Sankyo, PMA also launched a new learning management system that hosts its content and additional resources. While designed for Florida pathologists, PMA is accessible nationally and internationally, positioning FSP as a leader in precision medicine education and setting a benchmark for other organizations.
I am proud to have established these two academies as part of my leadership legacy with the DPA and FSP. They provide limitless opportunities for pathologists to learn, teach, network, and grow – ensuring our profession remains current, competent, and prepared to deliver the highest quality patient care.
