The rise of digital pathology and machine learning marks one of the most significant shifts in our profession’s history. As pathologists, we must proactively shape this transformation to ensure we remain integral to the diagnostic process.
Precise diagnosis requires more than data – it demands the integration of clinical insight, traditional testing, and emerging technologies. Strategic leadership is essential. This includes:
Partnering with industry to guide ethical innovation
Educating both pathologists and referring clinicians
Helping to define regulatory frameworks and clinical guidelines
Recognizing this need, I have spent the past three years collaborating with an AI startup, bridging technical advances with the practical needs of the pathology community. As a recent past president of the Australasian Division of the International Academy of Pathology (IAP), I have advocated for pathologists during this pivotal period of change. I am also contributing to national guidelines that will help laboratories manage the digital transition safely and effectively.
Education remains central to my work. I regularly lecture to trainees, senior pathologists, surgeons, clinicians, and patients, demystifying AI integration and reinforcing how these tools can enhance – not replace – our role.
With progress comes pressure. Many pathologists already face demanding workloads, and adapting to change adds new stressors. It is vital that we prioritize peer support and create environments that foster resilience. Effective leadership is not about standing alone but about lifting others, creating space for growth, and working for the greater good.
Equally important is ensuring that under-resourced settings are not left behind. AI has the potential to expand access to pathology services in these regions. Over recent years, I have taught both virtually and in person in Myanmar, Vietnam, the Philippines, and India, covering histopathology and AI applications.
This is a unique moment for our profession. With thoughtful, compassionate leadership, we can meet the challenge – together.
