Historically, pathology has been viewed as a behind-the-scenes specialty – tucked away behind the paraffin curtain, often associated with the morgue or limited to reading slides in isolation. The consequence is a disconnect between pathologists and both the clinical team and the public.
However, in today’s era of personalized medicine, we must redefine our role and make our contributions more visible and impactful. Throughout my career, I have sought to bridge this gap and bring pathology to the forefront of patient care. As a practicing cytopathologist, I have had the opportunity to be involved in patient-facing procedures, such as fine-needle aspiration (FNA), where I provide real-time diagnoses and interact directly with patients and referring physicians.
These encounters have reinforced to me the vital role pathologists play in streamlining care. In addition, I have led and actively participated in community outreach efforts, including the College of American Pathologist (CAP)-sponsored See, Test & Treat events in Mississippi, where we provide free cervical and breast cancer screenings to underserved women. These events extend the role of pathologist beyond the microscopic, placing us directly in front of patients thereby making our impact visible not just to the community but also to hospital leadership. For my contributions I was honored with the Herbek Humanitarian Award and Outstanding Patient Service Award by CAP in 2023.
In addition to cytopathology, I practice surgical pathology with special interests in areas of head and neck and urologic pathology. I have regularly contributed to multidisciplinary tumor boards in these areas and have realized that active participation by a pathologist has direct influence on diagnostic and management decisions. When pathologists consistently show up, speak up, and engage, our clinical colleagues respond with appreciation and collaboration. My efforts were recognized with the 2023 Outstanding Consultant Award from the Department of Otorhinolaryngology.
These honors reflect a broader truth: when pathologists make themselves visible and indispensable, they are seen, heard, and valued. It is no longer enough to ask for a seat at the table – pathologists must take initiative, participate in decision-making, and lead from the front. By stepping out from behind the microscope and into the clinical conversation, pathologists can be effective and integral partners in delivering high-quality, patient-centered care.
