About María del Rocío Martín López

Pathology is a great medical specialty. We “get to the bottom of disease,” now more than ever with molecular technology. We should be proud to be pathologists – working collaboratively with physicians, biologists, and many others – while recognizing that we stand on equal ground, not in a lesser role. Our reports combine knowledge, experience, international protocols, advanced molecular techniques, and clinical data. We are detectives who integrate information, and notaries who testify to the real and underlying cause of disease.

Our specialty must be visible. We are not “moles in the basement.” Pathologists should be active in hospital life – attending meetings, committees, and molecular tumor boards. We should also share our work with the public through press, radio, television, and direct conversations with patients and families. Our reports are not automatic outputs; they are complex, integrated analyses with significant therapeutic and prognostic impact.

Digital and molecular pathology are essential. Do not be afraid of change – embrace it. Learn, study, practice, and remain open. Step by step, you will grow into a modern digital and molecular pathologist.

Standardize pathology reports. Reports should be understandable worldwide. Follow international models such as those from the ICCR, College of American Pathologists, and other consensus groups.

Engage in management. To be visible to hospital directors and managers, learn their language and skills. Pathologists are leaders too. If we want to improve our departments and our specialty, we must clearly explain our vital role in patient care and in managing the cost of modern therapies. Managers want solutions, not problems – so provide clear, practical answers.

Always be a kind and collaborative colleague. Smile, communicate, and offer your best. Share your deep knowledge with pride, but with humility and a spirit of service.
