Biggest challenge in pathology? Integrating digital pathology and AI into clinical practice is the biggest challenge facing pathology today. This topic is frequently discussed in articles, congresses, and meetings with experts in the field.

Some of the major issues that need to be addressed include integration, data management, and regulations. In addition, there is a need for extensive training and a significant mindset shift from traditional microscopy to digital displays and AI tools that can assist in routine practice.

Another potential barrier is the cost of implementation, followed by the validation process. Ultimately, it's about building trust and fostering an open mindset.

Controversial opinion? My most controversial opinion has to do with the need to bring the pathologist closer to the patient. Because of their behind-the-scenes work and minimal direct interaction with patients, pathologists' roles are often under-the-radar, despite their critical role in diagnosing diseases and guiding treatment decisions. This limited exposure can lead to a reduced understanding of their contributions among the public and healthcare professionals. To address this, increasing pathologists' involvement in patient consultations, multidisciplinary team meetings, and direct clinical decision-making processes can help bridge the gap. Pathologists can provide valuable support and reassurance by engaging more closely with patients, particularly those who are anxious about their diagnosis, such as those with nodules (in my experience).

Although some pathologists may be apprehensive about interacting with patients, it's important to recognize that these patients are often looking for support and a friendly face during what can be a very frightening time. By directly explaining diagnoses and providing comfort, pathologists can increase their impact and satisfaction in their role. In addition, recognition and appreciation within the healthcare system will be further enhanced by increasing public and professional education about the vital role of pathology.

Qualities of innovative thinkers? Insatiable curiosity beats at the heart of every innovative thinker. This relentless desire to understand fuels a constant stream of questions: How does it work? Why is it done this way? Can it be done better? This questioning spirit drives exploration beyond the familiar, pushing boundaries and challenging assumptions. It's the spark that ignites the journey to breakthrough solutions and transformative ideas.

Curiosity thrives alongside resilience. The road to innovation is rarely smooth, and setbacks are inevitable. A truly innovative person has the strength to persevere through these challenges. They view failure not as an obstacle, but as a valuable learning experience. This resilience allows them to adapt, refine their ideas, and overcome obstacles. They maintain a positive outlook and use each misstep as a stepping stone toward their ultimate goal. This tenacity allows them to turn breakthrough concepts into reality.
