Exciting developments and trends? Pathology is advancing with the increasing use of AI and machine learning algorithms to assist pathologists in diagnosis and prognosis. This has the potential to improve the accuracy and efficiency of pathology services, leading to better clinician experience and improved patient outcomes. Personalized medicine and molecular pathology are also exciting trends, offering the possibility of tailoring treatments to individual patients based on their unique genetic profiles. Additionally, the analysis of lab data on a population level can provide valuable insights into disease prevalence, health trends, and treatment outcomes, leading to improved health outcomes on a larger scale.

Qualities of innovative thinkers? In the context of pathology and laboratory medicine, we often encounter high-pressure situations, such as diagnosing critical illnesses, dealing with complex testing procedures, or making critical decisions. By embodying the principles of Stoicism, individuals in these fields can maintain a focused approach when facing challenging cases or unexpected results. Embracing the stoic concept of accepting what is beyond our control, while focusing on what can be influenced, allows professionals in these fields to navigate the uncertainties of diagnosis and testing with resilience and a clear mindset.

Deciding which problems to tackle? When choosing which problems to tackle, I embrace the dichotomy of control – carpe diem (seizing the day), and anekantavada (non-absolutism) – as guiding principles for my decision-making. I focus on accepting what is beyond my control, such as eventual outcomes, while directing my energy towards influencing what I can, such as ensuring the most accurate and timely pathology services. Carpe diem reminds me of life's impermanence, urging me to maximize each moment with urgency and purpose. Anekantavada fosters an open and flexible mindset in decision making, considering multiple perspectives and possibilities simultaneously. This approach helps me navigate the complexities of working with others and daily decision-making to the best of my ability.
