Biggest challenge in pathology? Within the Latin American and Caribbean countries, the most significant issue is maintaining parity with the latest technological advancements available in the developed world and ensuring accessibility of these innovations. Whilst the major cities have access to new technologies and knowledge almost concurrently with the developed world, remote areas or smaller cities often do not experience this level of development.
The currency disparity between the dollar, euro, and Latin American and Caribbean currencies further impedes our access to medical advancements. Coupled with goverment’s lack of interest in lowering taxes on medical equipment, the unfavorable exchange rates hinder our ability to deliver optimal healthcare to all our citizens. Hence, it is imperative that we receive greater support from administrations to deliver the highest quality of pathology services to every corner and citizen of our countries.
Another major challenge lies in the education of medical students and residents. There are significant disparities between teaching hospitals and universities in our countries; while some institutions are on par with those in the US or Europe, others struggle daily with limited resources and medical technology.
Teaching hospitals and universities in the US and Europe must begin to recognize the potential of our students and young doctors. By supporting exchange programs, fellowships, internships, and observerships, these institutions can play a key role in fostering the development of our future healthcare professionals and enhancing healthcare conditions in our countries.
Exciting developments and trends? The synergy between AI technology and digital pathology represents a paradigm shift in healthcare accessibility. By leveraging these advancements, we can envision a future where healthcare providers worldwide have access to sophisticated diagnostic tools and expertise, regardless of geographic location or resource constraints. This transformative approach holds the potential to enhance diagnostic precision, reduce turnaround times, and ultimately improve patient outcomes on a global scale.
Inspiring leader? Saul Suster and Jaime Mejia, both distinguished pathologists from Latin America have inspired me through their exceptional mentorship and a commitment to sharing knowledge generously.
