About Valerie Fitzhugh
Valerie’s medical expertise lies in musculoskeletal pathology and cytopathology, both of which she practises at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. “She is so versatile,” said one nominator. “She contributes to the education of medical students and residents. She also practices and publishes in bone and soft tissue pathology, which is tough, and she does this because she cares for her patients. In addition, she has used social media to enhance pathology education for both health professionals and those outside health care.”
Valerie teaches residents both in the classroom and at the microscope, as well as giving lectures to medical and dental students. She says, “Never be afraid to say when you don’t know something. You will garner far more respect from your colleagues when they recognize that you are an honest and ethical pathologist who will always be straight with them. This creates trust, which is crucial in clinical medicine.”
