About César Augusto Alvarenga
“This young pathologist works really hard seeing daily breast, gynecological, soft tissue, bone, urological, gastrointestinal, neurological and thyroid cases,” said one nominator. César, a Brazilian pathologist specializing in breast cancer, earned his doctorate in medicine in 2011 and currently practises at the Instituto de Patologia de Campinas in São Paulo. His next stop? A fellowship under Christopher Fletcher and Susan Lester at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston USA.
“There is a cosmic world inside each tumor that the pathologist must decipher,” says César of his work. “Pathologists must keep an open mind at all times when working at the microscope.” The most important lesson of his career to date, he says, is that both young and senior pathologists have much to learn from each other, and that they can teach one another important things to help make correct diagnoses.
