Holiday, Celebrate

This month, we set a panel of globally renowned, highly accomplished and hugely respected pathologists a difficult challenge. We asked them to review our nominations to this year’s Power List and to select those whom they felt were worthy of a place on the list. The catch? We weren’t following last year’s approach (when we asked our judges to choose those pathologists and laboratory professionals whom they deemed to be the best of the best). No, that challenge would have been far too easy. This year, we asked them to select pathology’s rising stars from a list of your nominations. Now, our judges are not strangers to working with exceptional new talent – in fact, between them, they have educated far more than they probably care to remember. But it was a difficult task because these promising individuals are yet to have a list of accolades or published papers to their name; they’re just starting out in their careers. In many cases, our judges had to go with their instincts based on the work that our nominees had been involved in so far. The result? A Power List that we at The Pathologist are immensely proud of.

This month, we present to you a showcase of people we truly believe are the inspiring leaders, researchers and educators of tomorrow (some of them have achieved that status already!). I have to say, when I read through this final list, I was incredibly impressed and hopeful, too. Hopeful of the strength of this new generation to overcome the challenges that are facing pathology both now and in the future. Confident in their desire to really drive the profession forward, and in their ability to act as strong role models and educators of generations to come. Immensely pleased by their focus on communication within their profession and with those outside of it. And impressed by their fantastic accomplishments so far. This is one powerful list!

Although it’s our policy to retain the confidentiality of our judges, I can say that they were voted the best of the best in last year’s Power List, so they certainly know how to spot great talent. To our esteemed panel of judges, I would like to take this opportunity – on behalf of The Pathologist and all of this year’s shortlisted Power Listers – to offer my heartfelt thanks for helping us to shine a spotlight on some truly inspiring individuals, and in many cases, hidden talent. We couldn’t have done this without you. And to this year’s Power List winners, huge congratulations from us all at The Pathologist. We’re looking forward to hearing more about you in the future!

About the Author
Fedra Pavlou

After graduating with a pharmacology degree, I began my career in scientific publishing and communications. Now with more than 16 years of experience in this field, my career has seen me heading up editorial and writing teams at Datamonitor, Advanstar and KnowledgePoint360 group. My past experiences have taught me something very important – that you have to enjoy working with, and have respect for your colleagues. It’s this that drew me to Texere where I now work with old colleagues and new. Though we are a hugely diverse team, we share several things in common – a real desire to work hard to succeed, to be the best at what we do, never to settle for second best, and to have fun while we do it. I am now honored to serve as Editor of The Pathologist and Editorial Director of Texere Publishing.
