Researchers have developed an innovative biosensor capable of detecting urea levels in fluids, including urine, through visible color changes. Utilizing gold nanobipyramids (AuNBPs) that react to urea breakdown by urease enzymes, the sensor presents a straightforward approach for measuring urea concentrations, achieving sensitivity as low as 0.098 μM. Its performance matched that of existing commercial kits, and it demonstrated reliability despite interference from other common urine components. Potential applications include point-of-care diagnostics and environmental monitoring.
