As pathologists and medical laboratory scientists, it is our duty to ensure that all patients receive high-quality care. Healthcare is a fundamental human right – but ensuring that all people have access to quality care is still a challenge.
In September 2024, I had the opportunity to interview Martin Luther King III at the ASCP Annual Meeting, where we discussed the many barriers that impact patient care and outcomes, making the fight for access to care for all more urgent than ever.
I encourage you all to watch this short video that encapsulates much of our conversation, and I hope it inspires you to think deeply about our role as leaders in healthcare and how we can better build a path to every patient accessing the care they need.
How do we ensure access to preventive care, not just in times of crisis? How can we effectively advocate for equity while navigating an increasingly polarized political environment? What does sustainable healthcare for all look like? How can we better anticipate and prepare for future healthcare challenges that might disproportionately affect vulnerable populations?
These are the questions we must be asking ourselves, and how we must challenge ourselves to continue to lead patient care into a brighter future.
