Pathology’s Role in Fighting Antimicrobial Resistance

A roundtable on the lab’s role in fighting drug resistance featuring Carey-Ann Burnham, Rodney E. Rohde, Timothy Gauthier, and Andrea Prinzi

Drug resistance is on the rise – and our pool of reliable antimicrobials is rapidly decreasing as pathogens develop mechanisms to survive treatment. This roundtable, recorded on June 22, 2022, invites experts working in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) to discuss the field from a laboratory perspective. How has the problem of AMR developed over the years? How are laboratory professionals helping in the global fight? And what does the future look like? They also discuss the impact of COVID-19, challenges currently facing the lab in identifying and addressing drug-resistant pathogens, and why collaborating with clinical and academic colleagues is so important for tackling the problem.

Meet the Panel

Carey-Ann Burnham is Chief Clinical Officer of Pattern Bioscience, and Professor of Pathology and Immunology, Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine.

Rodney E. Rohde is Regents’ Professor at Texas State University System and Associate Director of the Translational Health Research Initiative.

Timothy Gauthier is Antimicrobial Stewardship Clinical Program Manager for Baptist Health South Florida.

Andrea Prinzi is an infectious disease medical science liaison in US medical Affairs at BioMérieux.

About the Author(s)

Liv Gaskill

During my undergraduate degree in psychology and Master’s in neuroimaging for clinical and cognitive neuroscience, I realized the tasks my classmates found tedious – writing essays, editing, proofreading – were the ones that gave me the greatest satisfaction. I quickly gathered that rambling on about science in the bar wasn’t exactly riveting for my non-scientist friends, so my thoughts turned to a career in science writing. At Texere, I get to craft science into stories, interact with international experts, and engage with readers who love science just as much as I do.
