Collaboration Amidst COVID-19

The importance of international knowledge sharing during the COVID-19 pandemic

Speakers of the Royal College of Pathologists’ International Pathology Day 2020 virtual roundtable highlighted the global differences in tackling the COVID-19 pandemic – from testing priorities to approaches for curbing the spread (1). But one thing that could be agreed upon, they believe, is the vital role of international supporting data. The pandemic has accelerated countries’ ability and willingness to share this information; however, panelists noted the difficulty of comparing studies with different age groups, methodologies, tests, and time points in the pandemic.

Although the relationships between governments and scientific advisors differ around the world, speakers also discussed the potential role of the pathology and laboratory medicine community in helping politicians understand COVID-19 data and make informed decisions.

About the Author(s)

Liv Gaskill

During my undergraduate degree in psychology and Master’s in neuroimaging for clinical and cognitive neuroscience, I realized the tasks my classmates found tedious – writing essays, editing, proofreading – were the ones that gave me the greatest satisfaction. I quickly gathered that rambling on about science in the bar wasn’t exactly riveting for my non-scientist friends, so my thoughts turned to a career in science writing. At Texere, I get to craft science into stories, interact with international experts, and engage with readers who love science just as much as I do.
