Speakers of the Royal College of Pathologists’ International Pathology Day 2020 virtual roundtable highlighted the global differences in tackling the COVID-19 pandemic – from testing priorities to approaches for curbing the spread (1). But one thing that could be agreed upon, they believe, is the vital role of international supporting data. The pandemic has accelerated countries’ ability and willingness to share this information; however, panelists noted the difficulty of comparing studies with different age groups, methodologies, tests, and time points in the pandemic.
Although the relationships between governments and scientific advisors differ around the world, speakers also discussed the potential role of the pathology and laboratory medicine community in helping politicians understand COVID-19 data and make informed decisions.
