About Phillip Monaghan
A Consultant Clinical Scientist at The Christie in Manchester, United Kingdom, Phillip demonstrates a strong commitment to improving patient care, driving service development, and representing laboratory medicine. He serves on the European Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine Working Group for Test Evaluation, developing tools and guidance for evaluating novel biomarkers to benefit patient-centered care. He’s also Deputy Chair of the Association for Clinical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine Working Group for Traceability and has recently implemented a mass spectrometry cortisol testing service for patients with Cushing’s syndrome receiving metyrapone therapy, mitigating risk of potentially fatal hypoadrenalism. Asked why he entered laboratory medicine, Phillip says, “Research performed in the lab translates directly to the clinic for improved patient care. The vast majority of clinical pathways are underpinned by high-quality laboratory services, and we therefore have the opportunity to influence and improve the quality of patient care and, ultimately, patient outcomes.”
